Further information about famous graves in Vienna Central Cemetery

The cemetery was designed in 1870 and opened in 1874. Today it has 300,000 graves and 2.5 million square metres. Honoris graves are part of the cultural history of Vienna. They represent a high honor, which the city of Vienna has to grant beyond the death to public figures. Today, about 1.000 honorary graves are in the honorary grave groups and in other groups as honorary dedicated graves. The personalities buried here form a cross-section of Vienna’s social life right up to the recent past. They have made a name for themselves in the fields of music, poetry, science, architecture, painting, inventions, drama, politics or sport. Politicians who played a key role in shaping the fortunes of Austria are buried in honorary graves. The Presidential Crypt in front of the Art Nouveau Church is the final resting place of all Austrian Federal Presidents since 1945.
