The Saussbach gorge in Bavaria is the perfect place to experience impressive natural landscapes and enjoy traditional Bavarian specialities. From the outskirts of the pretty town of Waldkirchen the trail leads along a canal into the rushing gorge. Depending on how fast you walk the whole tour takes between one and two hours.
From the car park at Karoli Badepark follow the road out of town for about 200 meters. Turn right in front of the tennis courts and follow the arrow pointing towards the saussbach gorge. After another right turn the way leads you past an enclosure with goats and straight down to the old Marktbach. Cross the creek via the footbridge. Turn left and follow the beautiful path leading through the gorge. After some time you will reach the weir. Here you can cross the canal and follow the arrow to Haller Alm into the most beautiful part of the gorge. In the shade of the shore-like ravine and floodplain forest, the whitewater laps moss-covered granite blocks.
Try Some Smoked Trout at Haller Alm
The Haller Alm appears like a little witch’s house. Over a long wooden walkway you can reach the magical resting place in the heart of the nature reserve, where locals like to order smoked trout.
After your trip to the Haller Alm walk back towards the Saussbach gorge. Cross the bridge, then follow the arrow to the right to the Saußmühle. On your way you will pass two more bridges. Cross the third one (there’s no arrow) which is close to the fish pond. The path turns into a dirt road. After a few more steps you will reach the Saußmühle which is another great place to take a rest.
